Tagging Along is River News Network’s wildlife and migration desk. It follows tagged and counted animals through the public datasets that track them: bird observations from eBird and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds from Journey North, hawk counts from the Hawk Migration Association of North America, sea turtles from seaturtle.org, whales and other species through iNaturalist and the research groups that publish their tracks.
The desk’s viewer rotates live cameras published by public agencies and non-profit observatories — national park bear cams, raptor nests, waterholes and ocean cams — each shown with its operator’s credit, and only when the camera is actually live. Story cards combine a species’ current movement with the data source, the count or position, and the time it was recorded.
As on every RNN desk, the figures are the publishing organisation’s own, dated and linked. The desk does not estimate populations or predict migrations; it shows what the counters and tags have recorded and who recorded it.
