About the Severe Weather desk

The Severe Weather desk is River News Network’s national and international threat board. It reads active warnings, watches and advisories directly from the National Weather Service alert feed, convective outlooks and mesoscale discussions from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, tropical cyclone advisories and forecast cones from the National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, and typhoon information from the Japan Meteorological Agency. European warnings arrive through MeteoAlarm, Brazilian and Canadian warnings through INMET and Environment Canada.

Each alert is shown with its issuing office, its event type, the areas named in the warning text, and the time it was issued and expires, together with live radar from the NWS network. During a named storm the desk follows one story from the first advisory to landfall and after: wind gusts and rainfall from automated stations, coastal water levels against NWS flood categories, and power outages reported by utilities and state emergency agencies.

Nothing on this desk is RNN’s own forecast. Severity follows the agency’s own scale, and the most extreme tiers — tornado and flash flood emergencies, tsunami warnings, top-level international alerts — are the only items that interrupt the network’s programming. For protective action, always follow the issuing agency and local emergency management.
