Kelvin Wave Tracking
Following the ocean’s changing height, temperature and winds through a growing record of official observations.
Warm-water Kelvin waves moving eastward across the Pacific can temporarily raise sea levels and help strengthen El Niño. Together, changes in ocean temperatures and atmospheric circulation can shift weather patterns across continents, increasing the risk of heavy rain and flooding in some regions and drought in others.Explanation: NOAA Fisheries · NOAA Climate Prediction Center
RNN is following buoy readings and satellite measurements to track ocean temperatures, sea levels and winds. We are comparing observations with scientists’ projections and following rainfall, rivers and fisheries to document how conditions develop around the world. Scientific findings about causes will be reported with their sources and dates.
One collection and story edition daily, in the 12:00 UTC window. Observation dates remain attached to each reading; agency warnings continue on the existing weather and response wires.
